Negotiations between the city of Los Angeles and a newly formed Ontario International Airport Authority that could return the Inland airport to local control got an official go-ahead Tuesday.

The first update on the talks is due in 90 days.

Until recently, Los Angeles and its airport agency had shown little interest in selling the Inland airport to Ontario. That changed last week, when a city administrator recommended opening negotiations for a sale.

A report calling on the Los Angeles City Council to negotiate a transfer of Ontario International Airport provides the first glimmer of hope for Ontario city officials wanting a chance to revive the ailing facility.

But this wasn't yet another report written by someone from the Inland Empire. This time, the message came loud and clear from Los Angeles' own city administrative officer, Miguel Santana. It's a surprise turn of events because city and airport leaders in Los Angeles have long maintained that Ontario airport was not for sale.

L.A. council committee backs plan for negotiations with Ontario over airport

LOS ANGELES - A Los Angeles City Council subcommittee has agreed with a recommendation from its top city administrator on opening up discussions for transferring control of L.A./Ontario International Airport.

City Administrative Officer Miguel Santana spoke at a special Trade Commerce and Tourism meeting on Tuesday about his recent report said the airport's value still needs to be determined.

"Ultimately, the future value of the airport will be determined through negotiations," Santana said at Tuesday's meeting in Los Angeles City Hall.

The US House of Representatives, Subcommittee on Aviation, will be hosting a congressional hearing this Thursday, September 27th at 1:30PM, at the Ontario City Council Chambers, 303 East B Street, Ontario, to discuss the future of the Ontario International Airport.

Los Angeles’ chief administrative officer is recommending that the city enter into negotiations over the potential sale of Ontario airport to the city of Ontario and/or other interested parties.

The city of Los Angeles should continue negotiating with government officials from the Inland Empire to determine if there is a way to transfer control of L.A./Ontario International Airport to them, a new report recommended Friday.

The report by Miguel Santana, the chief administrative officer for Los Angeles, also concluded that a December 2011 proposal by Ontario municipal officials to take over the struggling airport should be declined.
