Key report recommends LA explore selling Ontario airport

The city of Los Angeles should continue negotiating with government officials from the Inland Empire to determine if there is a way to transfer control of L.A./Ontario International Airport to them, a new report recommended Friday.

The report by Miguel Santana, the chief administrative officer for Los Angeles, also concluded that a December 2011 proposal by Ontario municipal officials to take over the struggling airport should be declined.

L.A./Ontario International Airport officials today are expected to present a new marketing and incentive plan for the troubled facility at 1:30 p.m. today at the Los Angeles World Airports' Board of Commissioners meeting in Los Angeles.

Ontario officials are also expected to release the response letter from the airlines regarding the proposed incentive plan at ONT.

Airlines at ONT that bring in new flights could benefit by having their rental fees waived for two years or aided by a $500,000 marketing campaign, according to the plan.

Free rent, a break in fees and up to $500,000 a year worth of advertising appear to be offers to any airline that adds new daily flights at Ontario International Airport, according to a proposal from the airport’s owner Los Angeles World Airports.

The airport’s manager had already announced a plan to offer incentives but few details were known until Wednesday, Sept. 12, when Los Angeles World Airports released a letter it mailed to the leader of Ontario’s Airport Airline Affairs Committee.

L.A. Ontario International Airport officials today have released a letter that it sent out to airlines that details a proposed incentive plan at the troubled facility.
The letter outlines three incentive proposals that aim to increase flights coming into the airport.

One of the plans is in response to a proposal submitted by the airlines earlier this year.

Ontario officials also suggested airlines be responsible for additional services such as baggage and passenger boarding bridges.

ONTARIO - It will be at least another two to three weeks before an analysis on the feasibility of transferring LA/Ontario International Airport to local control is released.

Los Angeles City Council's Trade, Commerce and Tourism committee directed the city's administrative officer, Miguel Santana, to review Ontario's proposal to regain control of the facility back in March.
